On Tuesday evening I had the opportunity to go to the Palace Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue to see Spamalot. My girlfriends parents had bought tickets for both of us as a birthday present. The musical based on the Python’s Holy Grail film has been “lovingly ripped off from the motion picture”. Essentially the story of King Arthur and his Knights travelling on a quest given to them by God (in this instance it was played by Python John Cleese).

As you might expect from a musical penned by Python Eric Idle and John Du Prez, Spamalot also has three songs from the 1975 film but also a variety of new new songs that did not feature. Whilst I’m sure you can find a proper theatre review online I wanted recommend seeing this show if your a fan of the Holy Grail. Not only does it follow the storyline closely, but it brings fresh meaning to the classic one liners, hearing the ‘African swallow’ skit in its entirety or the ‘trip to Camelot’ certainly brought cheers from the crowd.
Whilst it may not be everyone’s preferred choice of show, I had a thoroughly good time, thank-you both my girlfriends parents and herself for joining me.
